About this recipe

Thistles of New York, a signature drink of Distilled at Gratz Park Inn in Lexington and patron favorite was created with Cardamaro, a unique amaro, or liqueur designed to aid digestion.

Developed over 100 years ago by the Bosca family of Italy, the Moscato estate wine they produced was infused with cardoon—a relative of the artichoke (hence the name “thistles”) and other herbs and spices. Cardamaro is made without artificial additives, and has an alcohol content of 17%.

Available in the United States only in the last decade, Cardamaro is making a splash in signature cocktails. Its low alcohol content; spicy, nutty and smoky flavor; and reasonable price point make it a great alternative to other amari with a stronger taste and higher alcohol content. Try “Thistles” with your favorite bourbon and a splash of a soft, fruity red wine.
