Norma Jean’s Baked Goods Southern-Style Chess Bars

Similar to chess pie, this delightful duo consists of a buttery chewy crust and a smooth, rich cream-cheese filling baked to a golden and flaky perfection.

Ingredients

Crust:
  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup chopped pecans, optional
Filling:
  • 2 cups cream cheese
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

For crust: Preheat oven to 350°. Combine cake mix, butter and egg until a soft dough is formed. Press mixture into bottom of a 9- by 13-inch pan. 

For filling: Using an electric mixer, beat cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth. Add eggs, 1 at a time, until completely blended. Pour the mixture over the crust and spread evenly. Bake 30–45 minutes, until the filling is set and the top is a golden brown. Cool at room temperature for 1 hour before serving.
